Now it’s February 2010, and he’s continued the inch-a-month growth pattern. Not kidding, I’ve got marks on our doorframe to prove it, and several out grown, but not outworn pants and shoes too! I recently heard one of the Olympic sportscaster comment on an athlete, “he just went through a growth spurt, so you don’t know what he’ll do, he might be brilliant, and he might fall flat.” I take this to prove that my instincts are right…growth spurts are hard on bodies and do affect performance. What do you think? I’d be interested to know if any other parents are noticing such things.

I have a 13 year old, who grew 1″ in June, and 1 1/2″ in July. His 18 year old brother is 6’4″. He is struggling with his soccer game, his usual coordination seems not to be there. Yet, his coach denies this as the reason; he claims the struggle is because he also plays hockey, “hockey players do not make good soccer players,” he says. I would like input on this, particularly any studies done on how growth affects a young athlete’s performance, or magazine/news articles, and, if there is any correlation between soccer, and hockey.
